Mississippi Gulf Coast Buddy Sports gives individuals with disabilities a day of fishing and fun

PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (WXXV) — Mississippi Gulf Coast Buddy Sports hosted their 7th annual Fishing With Buddies event in Pass Christian Tuesday afternoon, giving kids and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to get out on a boat and reel in a few fish.

“I get to go fishing with my dog. It means the world to me,” said participant Brittney Sullivan.

Over 50 individuals with disabilities gathered at the Pass Christian Harbor to load onto boats and spend the afternoon casting out their lines in hopes of reeling in some big catches.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Buddy Sports hosts this special event each year with the help of local boat captains who generously donate their time to take these kids and adults out on the water for a memorable day of fishing. Local businesses also play a vital role by donating fishing poles, bait, snacks, and even a hot meal for everyone to enjoy when they return to the dock.

Thanks to the generosity and support of our local community, this event creates lasting memories and provides an incredible experience for everyone involved.

“We try to give them opportunities that they may not have been able to participate in because it may be financial limiting to them. You know, a lot of the parents just can’t participate in events that cost four or $500, and if they’ve got a couple kids, it may be $1,000. They just can’t do that,” said Mike Crawford, Executive Director of Mississippi Gulf Coast Buddy Sports. “So, we go out and get some great sponsors and grants and provide this at no cost. And the fishermen – some of them are charter captains, some of them are just local guys that donate their time and efforts. It doesn’t cost a thing.”

Before they hit the water, we talked with a few participants to see what they were looking forward to the most.

“Catch a lot of fish. Catch fun stuff and catch a lot of stuff. Shrimp. Everything,” said participant Damien Kiker. “This my second year. I been. First time was last year.”

“I’m excited to have fun with all my friends. I see maw maw, paw paw, me, mom, and Nicky. Everybody in my family,” said participant Nolan Rood. “I’m gonna catch a red as big as this.”

Smiles filled their faces as they joined the captains and their families aboard the boats and set off for a fun afternoon on the water.
