Governor Reeves declares Oct. 12-17 Fall Severe Preparedness Week in MS
MISSISSIPPI (WXXV) — Governor Tate Reeves has officially proclaimed October 12-17 as Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Mississippi.
This new move by Governor Reeves is putting a spotlight on the state’s secondary severe weather season. And while Spring usually gets most of the attention for tornadoes, Mississippi can and does experience significant severe weather all the way from October through December.
In 2025 alone, the state of Mississippi recorded 80 tornadoes, including seven during the late fall window.
Governor Reeves is urging residents to prepare before severe weather strikes, and this week should be used to review emergency plans, and make sure families are ready to respond if and when those storms come through.
There are many ways families can prepare, but one important thing to be aware of is safe shelter spots that are available when weather gets severe. Those locations will be listed on the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website when they open prior to strong storms.
And during this week, MEMA is also partnering with the National Weather Service to highlight different severe weather hazards and provide Mississippians with information to help them prepare. Each day of the newly proclaimed Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week focuses on the different hazards, and MEMA plans to share preparedness information and safety tips on social media.
Monday — Make a plan
Tuesday — Severe thunderstorms
Wednesday — Tornado safety tips
Thursday — Flash flooding
Friday — Warning reception methods
Saturday — Mobile and manufactured home safety
The purpose of the preparedness week is to ensure that Mississippians have an emergency plan for severe weather, take time to review insurance policies and documents, have an emergency supply kit ready to go, a way to receive alerts, and the information they need to stay safe when the weather decides to take a turn for the worse.
All week long, safety information and daily tips can be found on MEMA’s official Facebook and X pages or on their website.
