Alzheimer’s Mississippi
There are 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease. At least 52,000 people are battling the disease in Mississippi.
Alzheimer’s Mississippi has been around since 1990. Today, the organization officially opened the very first Gulf Coast office. Alzheimer’s Mississippi offers support services for families who are caring for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
The office provides support groups throughout the community, as well as free programs that highlight need-to-know facts for caregivers such as how to communicate with someone dealing with the disease and knowing the signs and stages of Alzheimer’s. Director of Public Policy, Advocacy and Communications TJ Harvey said, “Caregivers provide over 200,000 hours of free care. In Mississippi, those hours are estimated into the billion dollars of unpaid care services. It can be a toll on the family. We’re here to support family members anyway we can.”
The office celebrated the official opening with a ribbon cutting and reception. Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes, as well as representatives from Congressman Palazzo’s office were there to check out the new office and congratulate the staff.
