City of Ocean Springs preparing for Hurricane Isaias

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV)- Ocean Springs officials are keeping a close eye on the storm, with their annual Cruisin’ the Coast Sock Hop scheduled for Friday night.

The City of Ocean Springs has declared a state of emergency to properly respond if conditions worsen.

Downtown Ocean Springs was still open to Cruisers Thursday as normal, as some residents of low-lying areas filled up at the city’s sandbag sites. Cythina Sutton with the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce said, “Ocean Springs is an event town, so we’d like to think we’re prepared for any shape, form, or catastrophe disaster or anything like that. So, even though it looks like we’re rolling and going today, we’re behind the scenes prepping how we need to. To keep our town safe as much as possible. As for today, we’re going to have a regular Cruisin’ the Coast day. It’s a beautiful day; we’re already parking the cars and hitting records of how many people are coming downtown. So, we’re enjoying today and we’re going to wait and take our lead from cruise central of what they choose to do for Friday and Saturday’s festivities.”

Ocean Springs resident Brenda Williamson said, “We’re gathering stuff out of the yard that we normally just leave out, to make sure it doesn’t go through the windows with the high winds. I plan on making sure everything’s tied down, getting our propane tanks filled, getting sand for our front doors, and making sure we have water and food just in case the electricity goes out.”

City officials urge residents to stock up on sandbags now as they continue monitoring weather conditions and evaluating any necessary changes to Cruisin’ the Coast events.
