The Allman Brothers Band Family Honored in Gulfport

Those who were at today’s Gulfport City Council meeting got the chance to meet the family of a music legend from South Mississippi.
The City Council honored the son of legendary bass player Lamar Williams from the Allman Brothers band. Gulfport native Lamar Williams Sr. passed away in 1983, but the bass player’s son, who also grew up in Gulfport, as well as other family members were on hand for today’s special honor.
The Allman Brothers received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2012 for their contribution to American music. “The style of music that he picked to be a part of, it’s still fresh today. People still talk about it. You can see the millennials playing it now and the teenagers now playing the music. It’s all coming back full circle. It’s only right to pay our respects to what he’s done in this realm,” said Lamar Williams Jr.
Williams Jr. tells News 25 the family is on a vacation from Georgia. While in town, they’re taking a trip to his father’s grave site.
