Hurricane Hunters tracking Isaias

The Hurricane Hunters took to the skies Wednesday to gather information on Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf.

Sam Lucey and Brynne Baxley with our News 25 Weather Authority team were on board as they flew into to the system.

As Isaias continues to strengthen in the Gulf, the Hurricane Hunters took off from Keesler Air Force Base Wednesday morning to collect data from inside the storm.

Andrew Wilson is with the Air Force Hurricane Hunters. Throughout the mission, he is actively gathering and interpreting data about the storm.  “So, we have to go out there and fly into the storm to gather data, which we gather with instruments on our wings and then with our dropsonde, which is a tube that we send off into the storm. And I take in all that data, I send it to the National Hurricane Center, and then the National Hurricane Center will take that data and then put out a better idea of what the storm is going to do with their forecasts.”

As the crew continued its mission, Wilson says he noticed something by the time they dropped their ninth and final dropsonde. “You know we noticed that the first drop, the storm looked a little bit more disorganized, but as we did more drops, really the second and third fix, which is whenever we go through the center of the storm, the storm got a lot more organized.”

Both the NOAA and Air Force Hurricane Hunters will continue to closely monitor the system from the sky. So, now is the time to have your preparations on land in place.
