Mississippi senators support research bill that would strengthen coastal research

Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde Smith are among the sponsors of the Cooperative Institute Act of 2026.

The bill would codify NOAA’s cooperative institutes program, providing long-term stability for research partnership with universities across the country, including Mississippi State and Southern Miss.

The program supports work on hurricane forecasting, storm surge, fisheries, aquaculture, and coastal resilience.

The bill has been referred to the senate commerce committee for further debate.
