Quiet tropics with unsettled weather ahead

Meteorologist Sam Lucey has a look at the forecast for south Mississippi

The tropics remain quiet across the Atlantic Basin, which is good news as September 10th is the statistical peak of hurricane season and there are no areas to watch for development over the next week.

A few showers or storms could develop late tonight, with a chance for isolated showers mainly after 4 a.m. Temperatures will stay warm and humid, with lows around 77.

Thursday looks noticeably wetter, with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the morning and early afternoon. Highs will reach around 89 degrees, and some areas could pick up a quarter to half an inch of rain, with locally higher amounts in thunderstorms.

Rain chances remain high Friday, with a high chance of showers and a few thunderstorms, and another high near 89. The weekend stays unsettled as well, with scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and another chance Sunday.

Looking ahead to early next week, temperatures climb back into the lower 90s, but daily rain and thunderstorm chances remain in the forecast. Monday and Tuesday will both feature a chance of afternoon storms, followed by another chance Wednesday.
