Singing River Healthcare Academy give students hands-on career experience

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV)– Nearly 280 high school students got a firsthand look at careers in the medical field Friday during the Singing River Healthcare Academy’s interactive learning event.

Students rotated through a variety of hands-on stations designed to introduce them to different areas of health care, including pharmacy, phlebotomy, respiratory care, CPR, and surgery. The experience allowed students to explore potential career paths while gaining practical knowledge from health care professionals.

For many students, the event reinforced their passion for helping others and pursuing careers in medicine. One graduating senior said being surrounded by medical professionals and learning industry terminology will give her a strong foundation as she prepares to enter nursing school.

Organizers say the academy is focused on preparing students for success by providing them with the skills, confidence, and exposure needed to thrive in the health care field. They also hope programs like this will help address ongoing workforce shortages by inspiring more young people to pursue careers in health care.

In addition to learning about various medical specialties, students had the opportunity to earn clinical hours required through their school’s allied health program.

By the end of the event, students walked away with valuable experience and a better understanding of the many opportunities available in the health care industry, helping prepare them to become the next generation of health care professionals.
