West Harrison Rallies Past St. Martin in Four-Set Thriller

It was a battle from the opening serve at West Harrison Tuesday night. The Lady Hurricanes hosted the St. Martin Yellow Jackets in a matchup that featured momentum swings, big kills and a wild finish to the opening set.

West Harrison jumped out to an early lead, with Chanel Herron getting a hand on the ball before Paisley French finished the play for the point. The Hurricanes kept rolling as setter Madalynn Rogers found outside hitter Makayla Ladner, who blasted a line shot for another kill.

But St. Martin wasn’t going anywhere. With the Yellow Jackets trailing 11-10, Abby Coggin came up with a big dig, Chloe Nguyen set Trinity Sullivan, and Sullivan ripped a cross-court shot that West Harrison couldn’t handle, tying the set at 11-11.

West Harrison answered and eventually built an 18-17 advantage, but St. Martin continued to claw back.

Karley Stein set Charlotte Robinson in the middle, and Robinson delivered a big-time attack through the Hurricane blockers to keep the Yellow Jackets within one.

Then came the comeback. West Harrison took a 23-20 lead and appeared poised to close out the opening set, but St. Martin flipped the script. Cherrell Seals cut the deficit to 23-21 with a cross-court winner before Camilia Calderon attacked a free ball at the net to tie the set at 23-all. Carilys Torres then stepped to the service line and delivered an ace, completing the Yellow Jackets’ comeback. St. Martin stole Set 1, 25-23, despite never leading until the final points.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, that comeback would be the highlight of the night. West Harrison responded by winning the next three sets to take the match in four. The victory keeps the Lady Hurricanes near the top of the region. West Harrison improves to 5-2 on the season and remains second in the region standings.
