New Ocean Science and Technology School at USM Gulf Park

Tragedies like hurricanes and oil spills have caused a need for more ocean studies. The University of Southern Miss will have a school just for that right here on the Gulf Coast.
Today, Southern Miss announced their new School of Ocean Science and Technology. The new school joins marine-related research and education programs under one administration with the three key areas at the Division of Marine Science at the John C. Stennis Space Center, the USM Gulf Coast Research Lab and Division of Coastal Sciences in Ocean Springs. Director of School of Ocean Science and Technology Dr. Monty Graham said, “This ties everything together. We are the biggest research academic program now in the Gulf of Mexico. We’ll be bigger than Texas A&M, LSU, University of South Florida, so we are the big dogs in the Gulf of Mexico now.”
The university currently has five research vessels. Dr. Graham says their students are able to go further offshore and deeper into Coast waters with their fleet.
