78th annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo kicks off in Gulfport

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Fishing officially began at midnight, kicking off the 78th annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo at the Barksdale Pavilion in Gulfport.

Anglers now have until Sunday to reel in the catch they hope will earn them a spot at the top of the leaderboard.

Event organizers say roughly 500 people are participating in this year’s rodeo.

But one young angler made a big splash on the first day of competition. A 16-year-old fisherman landed a massive 312-pound bull shark.

The Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo continues through the weekend and wraps up Sunday. Organizers say anglers will keep competing for the top spot.
