Quarles Elementary Gets Renovated as Part of Day of Caring

United Way’s Leo Seal Jr. Day of Caring was in full swing Friday, as volunteers spread out along the Gulf Coast to give help and support wherever it was needed.

Volunteers from the Climb C.D.C. Workforce Training Institute descended on W.J. Quarles Elementary School to help renovate their physical education room with new drywall, paint, and improvements to the concrete floor. The room, which was wood paneled and had some slight damage from Hurricane Katrina, needed to be repaired to help with sound proofing and noise reduction.

Horace Fortenberry, P.E. coach at Quarles Elementary, says, "They’ll be very excited. They’ve been asking questions all week about what they’re doing and I just tell them they’re making it better for us. It gets so loud that sometimes they have to cover their ears and kids with special needs, it’s kind of difficult for them in the room."

J.P. Nicolais, Development Director of Climb C.D.C.’s Workforce Training Institute, says, "Day of Caring is really about improving the lives of our community, especially our students, as well as our nature and our environment."

The volunteers expect to start on painting and the floor next week.
