Local ministry providing flood relief in Stone County

STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)-In the aftermath of the devastating flooding in Stone County, some families are still picking up the pieces in the long road to recovery.

A local ministry is stepping in, bringing relief, support, and a lot of heart to families in need.

“I love it, it’s addictive, but it’s a joy just to be out here and be able to serve other people, and I feel like if I was in this situation a lot of people would come and help me so I want to go help others.”

Brandy Haden is the president of Just the Crumbs Ministries; a group focused on helping families pick up the pieces after disaster strikes.

He and his team have been busy and they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

Each day, they are out in the community working to provide relief. Whether it’s gutting homes, removing trees or serving meals, Haden says they are just trying to give people some hope and help.

When they show up, he says the residents are grateful. “Some of them just don’t know how to act because they haven’t had anybody help them like that before. We’re just trying to show them that this is what people are supposed to do for each other.”

Several of the homes they’ve been called to have been flooded with water up to seven feet high, making it necessary to tear out walls and remove damaged items. “It’s a mess, but I mean we get all of the wet stuff out and then come in and treat it with mold spray, and are able to get it in the direction it needs to go to start drying it so that it can be put back together.”

As long as volunteers continue to step up, Haden says they’ll keep doing everything they can to help. “You know if funds come available, we’ll try and help get some sheet rock for some of these people to get it back together. Because just tearing it is just part of the problem. Then they’ve got to be able to put it back together. That’s where it gets expensive.”

They’ll continue to serve food to those affected by the flooding every day at the back of Stone Middle School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
