Transgender equality on the Mississippi Gulf Coast
Sunday marked the one year anniversary of a transgender woman’s death in St. Martin.
Twenty-five year-old Dee Whigham was killed, along with several other transgender people in 2016. Since 2014, the number of transgender deaths by murder has increased significantly.
People like Molly Kester hope the community will start to take notice of the LGBTQ community and be more aware. “We’re just normal people like everyone else. We all have our story and it’s just something that people need to hear. We’re a good community. We’re good people. We have a voice when we want to be heard.”
Kester says the transgender community wants nothing more than to just be respected like everyone else.
