Gulfport Admiral replaces Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss

In the midst of a dark time for the Ole Miss football program comes great opportunity for the next in line.
In the wake of yesterday’s shocking resignation from Head Coach Hugh Freeze, Gulfport native Matt Luke has been thrust into the role of interim coach.
Coach Luke learned from the best after all, starting with his high school coach Ronnie Cuevas. The two crossed paths at Gulfport from 1991 to 1994 and they’ve kept in touch ever since.
On Wednesday, the old friends reunited at the Mississippi Association of Coaches Clinic with seemingly no foresight behind closed doors. “I tell you what, if he knew anything it he was tightlipped because he didn’t let a secret out. I was shocked because I left the coaches clinic Thursday driving to Birmingham and I was listening to Sirius radio all of a sudden Hugh Freeze resigns and it was a shocker to me. When they said that I said ‘well, shoot, they can’t hire anybody or bring anybody in this late so they’re going to make somebody an interim coach. I was just thinking to myself ‘I wonder if Matt has a chance to do this,” said Cuevas.
Overall, Luke is in his tenth season as a coach at Ole Miss after lettering all four years with the Rebels as a center from 1995 to 1998.
