140 Mile Charity Walk

Two brave souls are trekking about 140 miles though the South Mississippi heat to reach New Orleans, but it is not just to get some fresh air.
Jake Alvarez and Lilia Melikechi are walking along Highway 90 to raise money for Camp Smile, a summer camp for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. So far “Miles for Smiles” has raised over $6,000, all which is going to help send kids to camp.
The two set a goal to walk 30 miles a day and reach Jesuit High School in New Orleans within five days. “This was his idea, he wanted to do something before he turns 30, something that would give back and do something for the camp because it means a lot to both of us. So this is the idea we came up with. We thought it would be fun and we haven’t really done much preparation. So far, it’s going well. We’re hoping we’ll keep it up,” said Melikechi.
The Camp Smile counselors began their journey in Mobile at their camp location. Jake’s wife is driving alongside the pair, providing water and food for the dedicated walkers.
