Pearl River Central Baseball comes from behind and wins Game One of the State Championship in walk-off fashion!
The Pearl River Central Blue Devils faced off against the Saltillo Tigers in a nail-biting Class 6A State Championship matchup, delivering a game full of momentum swings, clutch hits, and unforgettable moments.
The game started with a tense, scoreless first inning, thanks in large part to Saltillo’s right-handed starter Roman Mitchell, who struck out the first batter he faced swinging. But the Blue Devils quickly got on the board in the top of the second. Eric Mavor drew a leadoff walk, and a left-field hack by Landyn Wilson moved his courtesy runner, Ayden Westbrook, to second. A fielder’s choice followed, and Westbrook crossed the plate for the first run of the game as Wil Cothran looked on.
The Tigers responded in the third inning, plating three runs to take the lead. Pearl River Central quickly countered, though, as the team’s RBI leader Blake Gill delivered a clutch two-run hit, igniting a massive offensive surge. The Blue Devils went on to score eight runs with a combination of hits and even a safety squeeze, reclaiming the lead at 8–3.
Saltillo, however, wasn’t finished. The Tigers chipped away, scoring in every inning afterward to tie the game in the fifth and then pull ahead by three runs over the sixth and seventh innings.
With the stakes at their peak, designated hitter JJ Morreale sparked a dramatic comeback. Smashing a ball deep to left field, he set off a sequence that saw Talon Cipriano, Landyn Wilson, and Parker Harper round the bases. Morreale himself dove headfirst for a triple, tying the game at 11 in the bottom of the seventh.
Saltillo attempted to slow the momentum by intentionally walking two batters, but sophomore catcher Eric Mavor answered the challenge, sending a clean hit up the middle for a walk-off, championship-winning run. The Blue Devils triumphed 12–11 in a game that showcased resilience, grit, and team spirit.
Head Coach Buddy Turange praised his team’s perseverance resilience is nothing new to this team ad He couldn’t be more proud of my guys. We also spoke with Morreale and Mavor after their game changing swings. All of those interviews can be seen in the video above.
With another win Wednesday at 1 p.m., the Blue Devils would have the chance to hoist the Golden Glove for the first time in ten years. Blue Devil Nation is ready to rally behind them for this historic moment.
