Poplarville Baseball drops Game One of the Class 4A State Championship
We’re in Pearl, Mississippi, for the 2026 MHSAA Baseball State Championships, where two Pearl River County teams are chasing titles. First up, the Poplarville Hornets taking on the Mooreville Troopers in Class 4A.
It was a bumpy start as Mooreville jumped out with four in the first, but the Hornets answered right away. Chadwich Brown ripped a liner to left to score Ty Keys, then a hopper from Chase Sones led to a misplay at first and Trip Jones came home to cut the deficit in half. The Troopers grabbed two back in the second before reliever Myles Glenn came in and slammed the door to settle things down. Poplarville’s bats kept grinding in the bottom of the second with three more runs on RBIs from Keys, Jett Smith, and another from Brown to make it a one-run game.
From there, errors stung the Hornets as Mooreville plated four in the third and added another four-spot in the fifth to stretch it to 14–5. Still, Poplarville kept fighting, pushing across runs late in the sixth and seventh. Final in Game 1: Mooreville 15, Poplarville 7.
Head coach Ashley Graeter praised his team’s resilience, and the Hornets will look to even the series in Game 2 Wednesday night at 7:00. Hornet Nation, we’ll see you here.
