Heartbreak in Hattiesburg as the George County Rebels fall in State Championship with extra inning walk-off

The stage was set in Hattiesburg for a winner take all Game Three as the George County Lady Rebels faced South Panola with the state championship on the line. What followed was a back and forth battle filled with momentum swings, clutch hits, and the kind of drama only championship softball can deliver.
George County wasted no time setting the tone. Braylee Bishop ripped a deep shot to right field, and senior shortstop Blakeley Slay, running on contact, slid safely into home to score the first run of the day. The momentum kept rolling when catcher Kyleigh Howell smashed a ball off the center field wall — just inches shy of a home run — driving in another run with an RBI triple to make it 2–0.
South Panola answered quickly, scoring two in the first and another in the second to take the lead. But in the top of the third, Blakeley Slay delivered again, lining a shot to right field that allowed Aryana Dixon to trot home and close the gap to one. From there, the game tightened. The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless on both sides, thanks in large part to pitcher Addison Davis, who entered the circle and shut down hitters with the same dominance she’s shown all season.
With two runners aboard in the top of the sixth, third baseman Paisley Pipkins stepped in with purpose — and delivered the swing of the night. She rocketed a ball into the left field corner, scoring one run… then a second… and then, with determination and speed, Pipkins rounded third herself. It was a three run inside the park home run for the Lady Rebels as they surged ahead 6–4 in the sixth. South Panola refused to fold as they plated two runs in the seventh, tying the game and sending the championship into extra innings for the second straight night.
In the top of the eighth, senior pitcher Addison Davis stepped up at the plate and delivered a deep drive to the right field wall. Pipkins raced all the way from second to score, giving George County a 7–6 lead. Davis was tagged out trying to stretch it into a triple, but the Rebels had reclaimed momentum.
Unfortunately for George County, South Panola had one final answer. In the bottom of the eighth, they walked it off, securing the state title with an 8–7 final. Despite the heartbreak, the Lady Rebels walk away with something bigger than a trophy — a legacy.
This group, led by a remarkable senior class, pushed the program to new heights. Head coach Anna Grace Rigby spoke emotionally about what her five seniors meant to her, praising their leadership, resilience, and and love for one another.
It may have ended in heartbreak in Hattiesburg, but reaching this stage is a privilege — and the Lady Rebels proved they belonged on the biggest stage in Mississippi softball for yet another season.
