Historic East Howard Avenue Walking Tour
In Biloxi, May is preservation month. Tonight, dozens roamed the streets of Howard Avenue taking in the deep history of the downtown area.
Folks joined in on the tour at the Biloxi Library and Civic Center and then took a guided walk that highlighted Biloxi’s newest national registered historic district: East Howard Avenue.
The tour showcased homes, like Cassandra Griswold’s, who made it through Hurricane Katrina and has a certain Biloxi charm to it. “We had about seven feet of water on the outside and on top of that you had about three or four foot waves that brought in all of the debris. All of those beautiful homes and Church of the Redeemer stacked up against the back of our house. We had seven foot of debris, even including the neighbor’s garage with the concrete still attached to the base of it,” said Griswold.
Last year, the preservation tour took a trip down memory lane on Seal Avenue. Tonight’s tour was followed by refreshments and displays about the area in the Biloxi library.
