Gulfport City Council names pier after Ship Island Excursions founder

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- The Gulfport City Council has renamed a pier at the city harbor after a local legend.

Tuesday, the council unanimously voted to adopt a resolution naming the Ship Island Excursions Pier after the business’s late founder, Pete Skrmetta.

The Skrmetta Family is celebrating 100 years of being in business this year.

Captain Pete, as he was called, died in 2024 at the age of 94.
