Three EF-1 tornadoes confirmed in Gulfport during Saturday morning storms

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)– The National Weather Service has confirmed three separate tornadoes touched down in Gulfport during severe weather early Saturday morning.

All three tornadoes were rated EF-1, with winds ranging from 90 to 95 miles per hour. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported in all three cases.

These reports are preliminary, and are subject to change based on further review of data and damage assessments.

Tornado #1: West Gulfport 

  • Time: 6:26 – 6:27 a.m.
  • Estimated wind speed: 90 mph
  • Path length: 0.74 miles

This tornado touched down near Ohio Avenue and Polk Street and quickly moved south. Damage was mostly limited to trees, including:

  • Large limbs snapped off
  • One hollow tree snapped at the base on Harrison Street

Tornado #2: Central Gulfport 

  • Time: 6:28 – 6:31 a.m.
  • Estimated wind speed: Up to 95 mph
  • Path length: 1.63 miles

This tornado started near 34th Street just east of Highway 49 and tracked south-southeast toward the beach. Damage from this tornado includes:

  • Trees snapped and uprooted
  • Garage doors blown out of two metal buildings
  • Minor roof damage to homes (missing shingles)

The tornado eventually moved offshore near Beach Boulevard and Pratt Avenue.

Tornado #3: South-Central Gulfport

  • Time: 6:29 – 6:31 a.m.
  • Estimated wind speed: Up to 95 mph
  • Path length: 1.52 miles

This tornado began near 30th Street and Brookwood Avenue and tracked southeast toward the coast.

Damage included:

  • Numerous large tree branches down
  • Several trees snapped near 5th Avenue and 25th Street
  • Continued tree damage stretching to Beach Boulevard
  • Large branches snapped on trees located between Roberts Ave. and Centennial Plaza on Beach Boulevard.
