Gulfport Council votes to reject crossing closures
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- After significant debate and public input this week, Gulfport City Council members voted to reject a proposal to close two railroad crossings in the Lyman area.
The two crossings are at Third Street as well as a more heavily traveled crossing at John Clark Road, west of Highway 49 and north of O’Neal Road.
At Tuesday’s public hearing, residents who use those crossings frequently all spoke out against the possibility of the closures, citing accessibility concerns to other areas of Highway 49 and getting to and from home.
Members of the council also voiced some of their concerns with how the process played out, leading to reject the closure proposals and keeping the crossings open.
