One dead after officer-involved shooting at Jackson County Courthouse in Pascagoula
Jackson, Miss. – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Gautier Police Department that occurred on April 16th at approximately 12:20 p.m. near Magnolia Street in Pascagoula.
The subject had allegedly driven his vehicle through a fence, parking near a large propane tank. He then attempted to ignite propane tanks in the back of the parked vehicle, in an apparent attempt to cause an explosion. When law enforcement arrived, the subject fled on foot, leading to a brief pursuit. An exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement occurred. The subject received fatal injuries.
No officers or deputies received any serious physical injury. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also involved in this investigation.
MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office. This information is preliminary and subject to change.
