Mississippi Sound Coalition announces new science-based recommendations

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)-The Harrison County Board of Supervisors heard from the Mississippi Sound Coalition as they announced their peer-reviewed studies designed to guide better management of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

The research identified critical tipping points in the Mississippi Sound linked to spillway opening. Scientists found that the duration, volume, and pacing of openings were key factors in minimizing ecological damage.

The studies were presented to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with promises of collaboration to protect both communities and coastal resources.

Scientists claim that operating within these science-based limits could help sustain Mississippi’s fisheries.
