Transgender Bathroom Use at Schools

The Mississippi Department of Education says it will follow new federal guidance on making sure transgender students can use locker rooms and bathrooms that match their gender identity.
Republican Governor Phil Bryant and Lt. Governor Tate Reeves are both criticizing President Barack Obama’s administration over the issue, but neither is calling for schools to defy the federal government.
Leaders at the U.S. departments of education and justice say public schools are obligated to treat their transgender students in a way that matches their gender identity, even if their documents indicate a different sex.
The directive does not impose any new legal requirements, but makes clear districts who refuse to comply are at risk of losing federal funding.
