Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, Hancock’s Kaison Koenenn!
We’ve reached the point of the football season where fewer and fewer teams are still alive and fighting for the coveted gold ball. We’ve gone from 14 coast teams to seven, and this win on the road was historic for one of our programs. Get to know the guy that’s leading the Hancock Hawks to greatness, their senior Kaison Koenenn.
This past Friday night, the Hancock Hawks traveled to a talented West Jones team for the first round of playoffs. With a 21-14 win over the Mustangs, the red and navy not only won their first playoff game since 2017 but also their first ever away post-season game.
Starting out the season 0-4, you may have considered them the underdogs from the start, but the size of the fight in the dog was revealed in district play, as they won three of their last five games to clinch the third seed in the region. Senior quarterback Kaison Koenenn expresses how proud he is of his teammates and their growth since the summer.
The Hawks dual-threat signal caller is putting up video game numbers when it comes to his senior campaign. He’s currently second in the state with 3,537 total yards with over 2,000 passing yards and almost 15-hundred rushing yards. He’s thrown 20 touchdown passes and has raced past the goal line himself 17 times. Koenenn has trained year round for moments like those, but he gives credit to his guys up front.
After all, the sport of football isn’t just an activity or an outlet for Koenenn, but it’s a way of life. He’s had a ball in hand since he was a kid and has dreamed of leading his community in this way.
The Hawks aren’t taking any time on their field for granted as they’ve earned more football in the month of November. All eyes are now set on a team just 30 minutes away as they hit the road to Picayune Memorial high school. We’ll have highlights Friday night of the Hawks taking on the Maroon Tide with a 7pm kickoff.
