LSU Baseball takes over Biloxi hosting the Samford Bulldogs for the Hancock Whitney Classic

It was the absolute perfect day for baseball as the reigning World Series Champions, the LSU Tigers and the Samford Bulldogs came together at Keesler Federal Park for the Hancock Whitney Classic. The Tigers played on Biloxi dirt for two days in a row, hosting an intersquad scrimmage on Saturday and then facing off against Samford for three, seven inning games.

WXXV caught up with LSU Skipper Jay Johnson prior to today’s game to discuss their time spent on the coast as they strive to maintain the momentum after last year’s finish.

“We’re excited to be here,” said Head Coach Jay Johnson. “It was a great environment last year. Our fans always travel well, but there seems to be a bunch right here, so it’s good to be out on the road and good for our team to be together playing in an environment with a lot of people at a great ballpark in a great town. Some of those things are overrated. They help you in recruiting for the future, but this is an entirely new team. It has to set its own course, and today’s a big part in helping us do that. We’re excited to compete. We’re going to play a lot of people and learn and develop because of this opportunity, but excited to get out and play somebody else.

LSU would go on to win game one 6-3 and game two 10-7, but would end game three in a tie 4-4. Highlights from game one can be seen in the video above!
