Scientists give 7th graders hands-on learning experience in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV) — One middle school science class in Biloxi got hands-on experience with some help from local scientists.

Scientists with the Department of Marine Resources took over one of the 7th grade classes at North Woolmarket Elementary and Middle School to teach students about the science behind oysters on the coast.

It was a packed classroom for 7th grade science teacher, Mrs. Adams, as two scientists set up stations across the room for students to put their textbook knowledge to the test.

Students spent the class period learning how to test water for bacteria, plate the samples, and even got the chance to get an up close look at some bacteria under a microscope. This is all to learn about how our water can affect oyster populations on the coast.

Students rotated through the work stations, testing them out. A few students said they’re excited to apply what they’re learning in the classroom to real life situations.
