Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College shines in season-opening win against EMCC
PERKINSTON, Miss. (WXXV) — Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College battled back from an early deficit in its season-opener game against East Mississippi Community College, ultimately notching a 41-21 victory.
Ahead of the game, the Bulldogs honored player Marcus Dickey, who sadly passed away in a car accident on Sunday afternoon. Dickey was an honorary captain for the game, with his teammates carrying his signed jersey for the coin toss, then presenting it to his family on the field.
Quarterback Landon Varnes finished the game with 426 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Running back Alan Woods rushed for three more touchdowns and 98 total yards. Tyler Henderson and Mason Beverly recorded one touchdown and well over 100 receiving yards apiece.
Former South Mississippi high school standouts stood tall for the Lions. Wide receiver Noreel White, a St. Martin alum, had 11 receptions for 101 yards. Vancleave native John Peterson added a touchdown on the ground.
Up next, the Bulldogs will host Mississippi Delta Community College on September 4th at 7:00 p.m.
