56th anniversary of Hurricane Camille’s landfall in South Mississippi

Sunday marked a somber anniversary in South Mississippi history.

It was 56 years ago that Hurricane Camille made landfall near Waveland as a category five storm.

The storm left a swath of destruction in South Mississippi and claimed the lives of nearly 260 people across the Gulf South.

Camille is still one of the costliest storms to ever hit the U.S. to this day in terms of damage.

Storm surge from Camille was recorded as high as 24 feet at one point.
