Mayor Skellie’s last breakfast event
Long Beach Mayor Billy Skellie enjoyed his last breakfast as the mayor today.
Before serving the past 13 years as mayor of Long Beach, Skellie was on the board of aldermen and the zoning board. Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott spoke about Skellie’s accomplishments and presented him with Citizen of the Year in Long Beach.
Mayor Skellie tells News 25 the biggest challenge was tackling Hurricane Katrina. He reflects on the team work between city employees and the first responders. “All of these people that just made us to continue to operate under such dire, dire conditions. I appreciate each one of them and the citizens that had the patience to know we were going to get better we just had to hang in and take it day by day and that was what was accomplished. I’m very proud of our community.”
Mayor Skellie plans on spending his retirement with his wife and travelling outside of Harrison County.
