Federal defense officials visit Keesler Air Force Base

Biloxi, Miss. (WXXV)- Federal defense officials made a visit to Keesler Air Force Base this week.

Acting Assistant of Defense for Health Affairs’ Dr. Stephen Ferrara toured the 81st Medical Group’s facilities and met with regional leaders.

Dr. Ferrara also met Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich, Governor Tate Reeves and leaders from the Department of Veteran Affairs.

They all discussed contributions Keesler makes to national defense readiness and the support the base provides to the Gulf Coast.

“What I found in my 5 – 6 months in this job is that there is a uniqueness to every site where we deliver health care in the MHS. The mission is unique, the people, because health care is ultimately very local type of phenomenon,” said Dr. Ferrara. “So I like to be able to get out here, Keesler is a place I’ve known about my whole 35 years in health care but I never had the opportunity to be here. It really is an important part of the military health system.”

Keesler officials went on to say the visit underscores the Department of Defense’s commitment to strong partnerships and highlighting the strategic importance of Keesler’s healthcare operations.
