Mercy Cross Center marks one year of changing lives in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss (WXXV) – It’s been one year since the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi opened the Mercy Cross Center in downtown Biloxi — a facility created to combat homelessness by offering hope, resources, and a path forward.

The center was born from a deeply personal calling experienced by Bishop Louis Kihneman after seven homeless individuals died in the woods during one summer. That tragedy sparked the vision for a place where those in need could find safety, dignity, and support.

Since its opening, the Mercy Cross Center has helped 136 people transition off the streets and into housing, work, or reconnect with family. The center offers a range of services thanks to a network of community partners, including Catholic Charities, Memorial Hospital, Loaves and Fishes, and Goodwill. Volunteers and professionals provide meals, healthcare, psychiatric support, and job training — transforming the center from a day shelter into a true transitional hub.

One of those success stories is Brian Fremin, who had been homeless and fighting for disability benefits when he found support at the Mercy Cross Center. “Mercy Cross has helped me a lot, a great deal,” Brian said. “I’m moving from homelessness to home. They helped me believe in myself again.” Brian now looks forward to reuniting with his family and continuing his journey in recovery and stability.

Leanna Saucier with Goodwill is one of many community partners working directly with individuals at the center. “We come here weekly to teach digital skills and job readiness. For me, jobs change lives — and that’s what we’re here to do,” she said.

Bishop Kihneman says the center has far exceeded expectations, crediting divine guidance for the transformation. “We’ve seen 136 miracles over the last year,” he said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve those who have nothing. That’s where we meet Christ — in the faces of those we help.”

Those interested in supporting the Mercy Cross Center can attend the Bishop’s Gala fundraiser on November 15 at the Beau Rivage. To volunteer or donate, click here or call the Mercy Cross Center directly.
