George County’s baseball season comes to an end at the Class 6A State Championship

With their backs against the wall, the only way they can move is forward. George County faced Saltillo for game two of the Class 6A State Championship. The Rebels were looking to keep their season alive by forcing a series split after dropping game one.

Getting the nod on the mound was junior right-handed pitcher Carson Pierce. Pierce came out of the gates on fire, getting all three outs by himself with the help of back to back strikeouts. The Rebels go down in order, so Pierce goes back to work.

The bleach boy gloves are out to play, going three up three down, one of those being an on the run shortstop Brodie Cecchi spinning play, with a dart to first base and another slow roller his way to keep the Saltillo off the bases.

Catcher Blane Green leading off in the second. He hits it solidly up the middle and the shortstop can’t come up with it. Green gets credit for the first hit of game two.

Designated hitter Bryce O’Neal looking to make noise, and boy is he loud with this one. It’s a slash hit right up the middle, Green’s courtesy runner Peyton Havard puts it into a sports mode coming from second all the way home and George county strikes first! An rbi single by Bryce O’Neal gives the Rebels a one to nothing lead in the bottom of the second inning.

The Tigers would load up the bases in the top of the fourth,  but the only thing in their way is a diving second baseman Grant Reeves, he throws out the runner from his knees to keep the Rebel shutout through four innings

Unfortunately for the Rebels, one run wasn’t enough. Saltillo added two runs in the sixth, and one run in the seventh and the Tigers won the Class 6A State Championship with a final score of 3-1.

Rebel Head Coach Brandon Davis said he couldn’t be more proud of his guys and he’s enjoyed watching this senior class grow.

“Our guys fought hard all year. You don’t just show up to the State Championship by accident,” said Coach Davis. “These guys are phenomenal, and these seniors definitely left this program way better than they found it. Breaking through and getting that State Championship last year and to make it back. They’ve played a lot of baseball in the last two years. They’ve played a lot of high-stressed baseball and I couldn’t be more proud of not just the players, but the men they developed into and that’s what it’s really about.”

The County ended their season at the State Championship with an overall record of 24 and 12. Congratulations to the Rebels on yet another outstanding baseball season. This group will never be forgotten!
