Pearl River CC Baseball wins back-to-back MACCC Titles! The Wildcat’s fourth conference title in five years.
The regular season for junior college baseball programs will come to a close on Tuesday, but one local team didn’t need all 52 games to come out of their conference on top. After dropping a tough 11-inning game one to Northwest Mississippi Community College, the Pearl River Wildcats remembered what they’re all about and clinched back-to-back MACCC titles and their fourth in just five years.
“Whenever we lost, it gave us a little more adrenaline and a little more focus to win that second one, and it makes it feel a little better when you lose the first one and you get to dogpile in the second one,” said left-handed pitcher Max Miller.
“That was the first time I’ve ever dogpiled, so it was a new experience,” said outfielder Kyler King. “There’s nothing like you and all of your brothers being with each other all celebrating the same goal.”
Logan Fontenelle: “It was unreal,” said right-handed pitcher and outfielder Logan Fontenelle. “It was actually one of the greatest experiences of my life for sure and just the build up to it was really cool and just knowing that we were going out to that game and knowing that was the chance that we were going to get to do it and dogpile, and it was absolutely unreal.”
Dog piles and winning titles isn’t anything new for this Wildcat baseball program, but Head Coach Michael Avalon made sure to emphasize to his guys that this didn’t come easy and they just accomplished something remarkable.
“You said it best by watching these guys achieve this. That’s the thing we try to focus on is each group is different,” said Head Coach Michael Avalon. “We’ve been fortunate to win a couple, but the thing I’ve always wanted to do is make sure these guys understand how difficult it truly is to win this conference title because it’s the best conference in the county. I reminded them along the way that they’re doing something remarkable and special and they’ll be able to put their number up with the rest of them for eternity.”
Next on their post-season agenda is the Region 23 tournament which Pearl River will be hosting at “The Dub” next week. We’ll keep you updated as “The River” continues to rise!
