St. Patrick Boys Golf team invited to PGA High School National Invitational

The past Sunday, Rory Mcllroy made history at The Masters being only the sixth golfer to ever achieve a career grand slam. This coming July, one local golf team is also making history as they compete in the PGA High School National Championship.”

Last October, the St. Patrick Boys Golf team won their second State Championship title in three seasons. Not only did the Fighting Irish secure the class 3A title by 33 strokes, but their two day total of 608 was the lowest of all Mississippi teams. Because of this accomplishment, the St. Patrick team was chosen to represent the Magnolia state in the PGA High School National Invitational at Pinehurt.

“The first time we went and won state we had a good score, but it wasn’t enough to go to nationals which we were hoping for, but this year we got the best in the state and now we’re going to nationals so it’s kind of like carried over from the last season that we won state so that’s always fun,” said junior golfer, Grayden Davis.

“Seeing all these guys come up and play at such a great venue. I’m excited to see a true test of golf for them, but I know they can handle it. They’ve won a State Championship for sake and there’s many more things to come for them,” said senior captain, Will Nolte. “Coach Jacob has been there my whole career. He’s such a great dude and a great leader and he gives us confidence which I think is a really big key to playing good in big tournaments and having a bunch of success.”

“I’m so proud of these kids and all they’ve accomplished this season and for it to pay off and go to Nationals and represent Mississippi is really great and incredible for us to do that,” said Head Coach Jacob Futch. “It really is something that all these kids can carry with them for the rest of their life whether it’s in golf or anything else that they do.”

Congratulations to Fighting Irish golfers Will Nolte, Grayden Davis, Christian Smelley, Jude Krohn and Colin Powers. They will compete for the national title on July 20-22 in North Carolina.
