Gulfport residents attend ‘Meet the Candidates’ event

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) – With primaries just around the corner, Gulfport residents had the chance to be up close with candidates running for public office.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a “meet the candidates” event Thursday, giving Gulfport residents a chance to engage directly with candidates running in the upcoming city elections. Each candidate had two minutes to share their vision and explain why they are best fit for office.

We caught up with former State Representative Sonya Williams Barnes. The mayoral candidate says these types of events are beneficial to the public. “An event like this is very important to voters because they can come and speak one on one to candidates and ask questions and engage with them in the process to find out you know what their thoughts are what their vision is for the city or their particular campaign, what their platform is and all of that is very important when people get ready to make a decision about who to vote for.”

Again, municipal primaries will be held this coming Tuesday, April 1.
