Mississippi Aquarium releases 20 rehabilitated sea turtles
BILOXI, Miss. (WXXVV)- The Mississippi Aquarium held a turtle-y awesome event yesterday as their rehabilitated sea turtles were released into the wild.
The release took place in front of Edgewater Mall around 4 p.m. and saw twenty of their rehabilitated Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles released after being cared for by the Mississippi Aquarium over the winter months.
Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are the most endangered species of sea turtle as they often get stranded off the Coast of New England and are unable to regulate their body temperatures.
Since opening in 2020, Mississippi Aquarium has rehabilitated and released 106 Kemp’s Ridley turtles.
Because Kemp’s Ridley turtles are native to the Gulf of Mexico, they can be released into the waters off the Mississippi Coast upon completing rehabilitation.
