Healthier Options for School Lunches for Two Harrison County Schools
Healthier options are on their way to two Harrison County elementary schools. This is thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Department of Education.
Bel-Aire and D’Iberville elementary schools will be receiving all new oven steamers which will use super-heated steam to cook with less fat, saturated fat, and trans fat. The combination ovens do more than just steam, they also bake and oven fry.
Bel-Aire Elementary officials says they’re excited to provide healthier, better quality food to their students. Bel-Aire Elementary Cafeteria Manager Tammy Marion said, “It just makes us a lot more efficient how we cook, I mean just time wise it’s very good. As far as the kids, as far as health, there’s no oils added to it but you still get that fried consistency. We have special pans that we use with it that have holes in it or have a mesh design in it to give you that quality that you need when you’re cooking with it.”
The Harrison County School District says it’s all about helping their students to be healthier and ready to succeed.
