Honoring unsung hero Hal Miller in Harrison County

Hal Miller, the Harrison County Building and Grounds Director, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this past Saturday. He was 66-years-old.

Miller was born and raised in Gulfport. He started working for Harrison County in 2010. He started from the bottom and earned his position to director when promoted in 2019.

Miller was an accomplished drummer and played in many bands over the years. Music was his first love and when working, he brought positive energy into a room when he sang.

The county held a moment of silence honoring Miller and remembered him with an article in their newsletter. Harrison County District Five Supervisor Connie Rockco said, “Hal Miller was one of those unsung heroes that most people don’t, and we have many of them in the county, but he stood out because he never complained. He was dedicated to his job no matter what it was. He was creative. He started at the bottom and worked his way up. Didn’t talk bad about anybody, always came in singing, trying to make someone smile. That makes such a difference in the work place.”

One of Hal Miller’s final projects is the bear carving at Orange Grove Library. He was asked to get the rotted tree removed, but instead the county agreed to keep the tree stump and make something beautiful out of it.

The county is working to get a remembrance plaque to honor Hal at the bear carving.
