New police department sets Moss Point in new direction

It’s been over ten years since Hurricane Katrina nearly demolished the Moss Point Police Department. Since then officers have been forced to work out of its run down conditions. Today, the ribbon is officially cut on a brand new building.
“Moving from the old and to the new. It’s all about the new.” This new chapter, a turning point for Moss Point police, as law enforcement welcome the brand new public safety complex, a highly anticipated milestone for the officers after Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed the old police department and the damages were never fully repaired. Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield said, “Our men and women who protect us every day without complaint have been working out of some of the most adverse conditions in that building that you can imagine.”
Like a dream come true, the ribbon was cut on a state of the art $4.3 million complex Wednesday afternoon. After the ceremony, Police Chief Calvin Hutchins escorted officials and members of the community around what will soon be courtrooms and offices for police. Chief Hutchins said, “It’s the beginning of a new day for the City of Moss Point. Something the city has longed for, the men and women of the department have longed for.”
The new building features a classroom, which is a brand new feature the old department never had. An evidence room is also another upgrade from the old department. “I think you will see a change in the way officers come to work, a change in their mindset,” said Chief Hutchins.
As for the old building, Mayor Broomfield says it will be torn down this summer to make room for more green space downtown. “It’s a win-win for the beautiful City of Moss Point, as well as the men and women in uniform.”
The new home for those who protect Moss Point, a segue into a new direction for the River City. “Brighter days coming, I think you will be seeing a lot of new changes in the City of Moss Point. That’s what we want the city and the public to realize,” said Chief Hutchins.
