Pine Hills Nursery offers tips for caring for plants during cold weather
Winter plant care has become a common topic on Facebook gardening groups as most of the country is experiencing freezing temperatures.
The plant experts at Pine Hills Nursery in Pass Christian share some tips to keep your outdoor coastal plants alive during freezing temperatures at night.
Cover your outside plants. It may seem like a common tip, but first place cloth then plastic to protect them from ice.
If you think your plant may be dead or frozen, wait until spring to see if it’ll come back to its full glory. Plant Hills Nursery Manager Polly Cuevas said, “Cover with cloth first and then plastic. Don’t put plastic in contact with the plant because it will freeze them when the ice gets on them. Be sure that plants are well watered when we’re going into a hard freeze, it helps to keep them hydrated because the winds are cold and dry. If a plant freezes, depending on the plant, you can cut them back and just treat them like you normally would. You don’t want to over water when they’re recuperating.”
If you cut your plant and the stem still has green inside it’s still alive and may come back with a little plant care and fertilizer.
