Delayed Mardi Gras celebration at Charles L. Walker Senior Center

Just like that leftover king cake at the house, there’s still some partying to do to celebrate Fat Tuesday.

Folks at the Charles L. Walker Senior Center in Gulfport were ‘Tardy to the Mardi,’ but it wasn’t their fault. Blame the cold weather on the Coast.

Even though the celebration was a day behind, everyone still enjoyed some great music, dancing, and of course, delicious king cake.

News 25 caught up with this year’s king and queen, John Anderson and Char Gavin, and asked them why Mardi Gras is so important to them and South Mississippi. “It means to have a good time, to share happiness with everybody, and I love throwing the beads to everybody. I’ve never been the queen and I’m so happy to be the Queen for the day.”

The senior citizens were happy they were able to put on fun events like this in a safe manner within the past five years during the pandemic.

It gives them something to do and they don’t have to focus on the negative things in life.
