Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: D’Iberville’s Adam Nguyen

Bowling is a game of consistency, repetition, and pure skills. It takes even more skill to win state titles in back-to-back weeks while also being named the top bowler in the state in the process.

Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: D’Iberville’s Adam Nguyen.

“It was mainly because my brother,” Nguyen said. “He’s the bowler in the family. His senior year, he shot the highest at his State match a 240-something series, so I’m just trying to carry on that legacy off my brother.”

Not only was Adam encouraged by his brother to pick up a bowling ball just four-years-ago, but he also took the time to teach him and explain the importance of a routine. “Whenever I get up, I get set, take a deep breath, and I throw after I exhale,” Nguyen said. “That’s my routine every time, because my brother taught me that in bowling, if you have a routine, you’re going to have consistent shots, and if you have consistent shots, you’re going to have good games. If you have good games, you’re going to bowl high scores.”

While Nguyen was trying to follow his brother’s legacy, he created his own legacy in the process. Not only did Nguyen and the D’Iberville boys bowling team win the team state championship two weeks ago, Nguyen also participated in the individual all-state tournament.

Nguyen was in third place with one game left and it wasn’t until the tenth and final frame that he had a shot. “I threw another ball and it was a perfect strike. I was like, ‘Oh, let’s go!’ I knew after that that I needed to get five and I was really calm about that because I just needed a good shot and I would be fine. I got up, threw a shot, and I think I hit nine pins, but hey that got me first place, so I was happy about that,” Nguyen said.

With a series total of 841, Nguyen was named the number one bowler in the entire state! When asked what makes a good bowler, Nguyen says it’s all in the mind. “I really think your mentality is what carries you and your bowling,” Nguyen explained. “You can do physically bad and it’s still okay because you can make up for it. If you’re mentally doing bad, there goes that game, there goes that title and there goes that state championship. The thing about bowling is it’s really you versus you. Nobody’s trying to block you, stop you, or trying to do anything. It’s really just you and your mentality and you being on the lane.”

Nguyen truly does love his time on the lanes, but he has other plans when it comes to college. “I plan on going to the University of Southern Mississippi majoring in Nutrition and Dieting,” Nguyen said. “They also have an a cappella team called The Spirit of Southern and I really think if I was a beat boxer on the a cappella team, that would be really cool.”

Whether he is knocking down pens or throwing down beats, we’re confident Nguyen will continue to be successful.
