Memorial Day traffic wrap up

The roads in South Mississippi were busy over the holiday weekend, but no major accidents or fatalities were reported on the Coast. This is according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesman Chase Elkins.
Two people died in traffic accidents on Mississippi highways north of the Coast. In all, 34 people were injured on state and federal highways from Friday evening until late Monday.
Elkins tells News 25 drunk and distracted driving were the two mistakes patrolmen observed this Memorial weekend. “We had a lot of traffic that we were expecting, but accidents were down. Zero fatalities were reported so that’s good. Our DUI arrests were still there. There were still some people making the decision to drink and drive and those we had to deal with, but it’s a success if we can get through a holiday with zero fatalities. That’s our main goal with ‘drive to survive.’”
Elkins says all 17 troopers assigned to the roads were patrolling the highways of South Mississippi over the holiday weekend.
