Mississippi makes moves towards mobile sports betting as Super Bowl wagers soar

The Super Bowl is one of the most wagered-on sporting events globally, with bets expected to surpass $20 billion. While most bettors place their wagers on mobile devices, Mississippians are currently restricted to casino sportsbooks, but that could soon change.

The Mississippi House of Representatives has passed a bill to legalize statewide mobile sports betting with strong support from its members. However, the legislation now heads to the Senate Gaming Committee, chaired by Senator David Blount who opposed the bill last year in 2024.

As the biggest football game of the year approaches, so do the big bets. The Super Bowl is the most anticipated football game worldwide and it’s also the most wagered-on sporting event. But betting goes far beyond the final score. Wagers can be placed on everything from which player will score the first touchdown to the color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach and even the length of the national anthem performance. When it comes to an event of this scale, almost anything is fair game for a bet.

While mobile sports betting won’t be available for the Super Bowl, Mississippi sports fans can place wagers at casino sportsbooks. During a recent House committee meeting, materials presented to lawmakers revealed nearly 9 million attempts to access mobile sportsbooks in Mississippi. This high demand could drive significant economic growth.

In December 2024 alone, the Mississippi Gaming Commission reported nearly $10 million in sports betting revenue from casinos. With mobile betting added to the mix, that number could rise even higher. Supporters of the bill claim say it would generate millions in annual revenue for the state through a 12% tax on all mobile sports bets, with the funds going to all 82 counties.
