State Attorney General completes review of four officer-involved shooting incidents

On Friday, the Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of four incidents involving officer-involved shootings — including the January 2024 incident in which George County deputy Jeremy Malone was killed in the line of duty.

These include:

January 4, 2024 — An incident in Beaumont involving five officers with the George County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Mississippi Highway Patrol. George County deputy Jeremy Malone was killed during a traffic stop. The suspect fled and was shot and killed by MBI officers in Beaumont.

October 11, 2022 — An incident in Greenville involving seven officers with the Greenville Police Department and two deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. A Greenville officer, Myiesha Stewart, died in the incident and two other people were injured.

August 22, 2023 — An incident in Canton involving four deputies with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. A victim died in a domestic-related incident and the suspect was shot and killed by deputies after he threatened them with a weapon.

In all three incidents, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.

August 14, 2022 — On December 17, 2024, a Hinds County Grand Jury indicted former Capitol Police Officer Jeffrey Walker and current Capitol Police Officer Michael Rhinewalt on two counts each of aggravated assault related to the August 14, 2022, officer-involved shooting. A woman passenger was shot in the head during the incident.

The incident was investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office. While this case is in active litigation, the AG’s office will not comment further on the matter.
