Destroyer being named after former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus
The Secretary of the Navy announced Friday that a new ship will be named after former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus.
The ship will be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. At this time, no exact dates for building are official. His daughter, Liz Mabus, will sponsor the ship.
Mabus served as governor of Mississippi from 1988 to 1992 before becoming the Secretary of the Navy in 2009.
He served in that position until 2017, becoming the longest serving Secretary of the Navy since World War I.
